University of Miami

According to source – The University of Miami baseball team, which received just three homers and 25 RBI from its three catchers last season, might be getting a major power surge for 2012.

It just depends on the NCAA.

Former Bethune-Cookman catcher Peter O’Brien, a Miami native, has transferred to UM because of family reasons regarding his mother’s health.
Normally, a transfer has to sit out one year of athletic competition. But O’Brien has appealed to the NCAA to waive the rule due to his circumstance.
UM coach Jim Morris declined to discuss the situation in detail until the case is resolved, but O’Brien is on campus, taking classes and participating in workouts.

O’Brien, who turned down the Colorado Rockies’ signing offer after they drafted him in the third round this past June, is a 6-5, 225-pound senior. In three years at Bethune-Cookman, he hit .336 with 38 homers, 38 doubles and 154 RBI.

According to source, The first time Miami University and Kent State butted heads on the basketball court this season, the RedHawks were undermanned and off-kilter.

Two and a half weeks ago, the RedHawks didn’t have Julian Mavunga and they got swatted by the Golden Flashes, losing by 21.

Tonight things will be different when the two teams battle it out for first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division. Tonight the RedHawks are at home, they do have Mavunga, and they are on a roll.

“Our players seem to be embracing these challenges,” said Miami coach Charlie Coles, whose team has won four straight despite the continued absences of Antonio Ballard, out for the season with a broken wrist, and Quinten Rollins, still sidelined with an injured wrist.

Rollins also missed the first KSU game, but it was Mavunga’s absence that really threw Miami off, Coles said.

“I don’t think we were prepared to play without Julian that day,” he said. “We didn’t find out until 12 hours before game time that he wouldn’t play.”

The RedHawks defeat Michigan 3-0 on the one-year anniversary of Brendan Burke’s death.

According to source, Miami University’s hockey players wore commemorative uniforms Saturday in tribute to their late team manager, Brendan Burke. The uniforms were to be worn for one day only.
The RedHawks might not want to give them up.

On the one-year anniversary of Burke’s death in an auto accident, the RedHawks turned in a near-flawless performance in a 3-0 victory over the Michigan Wolverines at Steve Cady Arena.

Reilly Smith had two goals and an assist, Andy Miele totaled three assists and Cody Reichard, making his third straight start, recorded the shutout with 23 saves as Miami completed a two-game sweep.

“It was obviously a big day for everyone, and there is no better way to honor Brendan than to sweep Michigan,” Reichard said.

After what he called a `very draining’ season, Canes cornerback Brandon Harris will forgo his senior season and pursue an NFL career.

It was a painstaking decision. But University of Miami junior cornerback Brandon Harris made it nonetheless.

Harris will forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.
“I have decided I will declare for the draft this year in 2011,”Harris, 20, said by phone Tuesday morning. “It has been a very long season. It has been very draining.”

Harris, projected by Mel Kiper Jr. and Scouts Inc. to be drafted 32nd — the last pick in the first round — did not specify the range of rounds in which the NFL’s college-advisory committee projected he would be chosen. He said the committee told him “some good things and what I wanted to hear. I’d rather not get into the particulars, but I felt I was in a good position.

“It was definitely a long process and you want to make sure you feel comfortable with what you’re doing because this is a decision that will affect the rest of your life.”

Harris said he thought it was the right time to make his move. A two-time Thorpe Award semifinalist, Harris earned first-team and second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2009 and 2010, respectively. He started 32 of his 39 games over three seasons, making 132 tackles, nine tackles for loss, four interceptions, five forced fumbles, two sacks and 28 pass breakups.

In 2009 he was a third-team Associated Press All-American while ranking second in the nation in passes defended per game.
“As a family, we weighed the pros and cons of staying and leaving — I just decided it was in my best interest to take this great opportunity I have in front of me and pursue my career at the next level.

“The overriding factor was being able to live out my dream. I’ve always wanted to play in the National Football League since I was a child. To be this close in the process, it was something I just couldn’t turn down.”
