According to source – Enrollment at the University of Nevada, Reno has reach the 18,000 mark for the very first time. The University welcomed 18,004 undergraduate and graduate students to campus this fall. This displays a 2 percent increase over the fall 2010 enrollment of 17,679 students.

The University observed a 4 percent increase in first-time freshman, with 2,880 freshman starting this year compared to 2,764 last fall.

The University welcomes 165 Presidential Scholars and 12 new National Merit Scholars this semester, the largest amount of each scholar type welcomed in a semester.

The National Merit Scholars join the 34 already enrolled, giving the University’s total to 46, the biggest number ever enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno. The University received sponsorship status by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in spring 2009.

According to source – On Saturday, Sept. 10, the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources at the University of Nevada, Reno is going to be hosting the Agricultural Experiment Station Valley Road Field Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The College encourages any individual interested in the many different kinds of research performed at the College to attend.

There’ll be tours, wine tastings, a children’s area, an antique engine and tractor display, a rainfall simulation display, the Great Basin Rangelands Research Unit Grand Opening and a souvenir shingle branding.

‘Second Annual Inner-Faith Night’ of University of Nevada-Reno (UNR) on February 23 saw various religious groups coming together in dialogue.

This unity celebration included dialogue among Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jew, Native American, Baha’i, and Atheist traditions. UNR Unity Commission hosted it.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed opened the event with an invocation, reading from ancient Hindu texts Rig-Veda (oldest existing scripture of the world), Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita. Brother Matthew Cunningham, Chancellor of Roman Catholic Diocese of Reno, concluded it with a Catholic prayer.

Participants included Pastor Phil Vana (Protestant), Brother Matthew Cunningham (Roman Catholic), Imam Abdul Rahim Barghouthi (Muslim), Esteban Castillo (Buddhist), Rabbi Teri Appleby (Jewish), Ben Aleck (Native American spirituality), Dr. Bradley S. Corbin (Baha’i), Joe Ferguson (atheist), Shirley Diaz (UNR Campus Unity Director), and Dr. Carina Black (Northern Nevada International Center). Choir of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gave a performance. Audience asked questions to the religious leaders present.

The University of Nevada, Reno is celebrating a new top 25 ranking on the 2011 Peace Corps’ College Rankings.

The ranking looks at the top volunteer-producing colleges and universities in the country and we’re one of them.

This year, UNR moved up to 21st place from last year’s 25th place ranking. Right now, 23 UNR alumnis are serving as Peace Corps volunteers.

But we’re still well behind this year’s leader,the University of Colorado at Boulder with 117 alumni serving.
