According to source, Governor Susana Martinez announced Tuesday the reappointment of former San Juan County commissioner Jack Fortner to the University of New Mexico Board of Regents.
Fortner, who donated approximately $40,000 to Martinez’s gubernatorial campaign, did not foresee the reappointment.
“I like to think that (my appointment) had to do more with the fact that I had a lot of support from the university,” Fortner said. “I would say I was a little surprised. It was not something I spoke to the governor about during her campaign.”
A senior partner at Fortner & Dalley, LLC in Farmington, Fortner said he hopes to seek election as the board’s president in March.
Fortner first served the board in 1999 and since has acted as vice president twice and as president once.
He graduated from UNM with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1978.
Locals may know him for his time as a San Juan County commissioner from 1996 to 2004, during which time he helped champion a new county jail, sheriff’s office and courthouse.
He also held positions on the Labor Management Relations Board for the city of Farmington and the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board.
Fortner’s colleagues on the Board of Regents describe Fortner as an honest and straightforward board member, whose primary interests are fair tuition rates and the health and sciences department at UNM.
“He likes to see outcomes,” said UNM president David Schmidly, who appreciates Fortner’sconservative and rational approach to budget shortfalls.
Though positive results may be hard to come by, given current economic hardship, Fortner said the board will do its best to cut budget items wisely.
