Eric Grabe helped the University of Tampa baseball team climb back to the No. 5 spot in the latest Division II poll after the Spartans went 3-0 last week.

The Vanguard High graduate is one of three Spartans hitting better than .400, going 9 for 21 to open the season. The third baseman has a pair of doubles, a triple, three RBIs and four runs scored for 4-2 Tampa. The right-hander has also thrown eight innings with nine strikeouts and a 4.50 ERA.

Chapel

TAMPA – Picture a kid in a candy store.

That’ll give you a good idea of the expression on Haig Mardirosian’s face as he stands before the massive pipe organ in the new chapel at the University of Tampa.

“At the risk of alienating a lot of my colleagues,” he says with a smile, “I’m going to make the boast that this is the finest pipe organ in the Tampa Bay area.”

Mardirosian knows of what he speaks. The dean of UT’s College of Arts and Letters, he’s a professor of music with 45 years of experience playing the pipe organ. And this one-of-a-kind instrument, built by the venerable Dobson Pipe Organ Ltd., is an instrument to behold.

It stands 55 feet tall and has 3,184 pipes, made of either wood or tin alloy. It took nearly two years to build – at the company’s headquarters in Lake City, Iowa, and here – and is considered one of the premier instruments in the country. Its mechanical key action or “tracker” organ is the type preferred by accomplished organists.

Besides its breathtaking beauty, the sound is absolutely spectacular.

“I’ve been lucky enough to play some of the finest instruments in the world, in recitals and for recordings,” Mardirosian says. “None have given me such a thrill as this instrument. And that’s a remarkable statement.”

The organ is just one of the grand features in the stunning $20 million Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values. Dedicated in December, the 15,000-square-foot building is located in the center of the private, liberal arts university. It includes a main hall with seating for 260, meeting and meditation rooms, art glass and sculptures, and two meditation gardens.

Its brick-and-granite exterior and zinc roof complement other nearby structures, and its interior is warm and inviting, with cherry wood, granite and extensive use of natural light.
