According to source – A 20-year-old University of Vermont student has been crowned as the new Miss Vermont, giving her the opportunity to compete for the Miss America title in Las Vegas in 2012.

Katie Levasseur of Burlington won the Miss Vermont Scholarship Competition over 10 other participants Saturday evening in the South Burlington High School Carrying out Arts Center.

“I am already looking forward to my duties this year, traveling, meeting new people, and getting the word out about my platform, which is Youth of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow,’’ Levasseur said after winning. Levasseur will talk to government representatives, business leaders, community groups, and citizens at large, urging them to get involved in fostering leadership skills and qualities in today’s young people.

Levasseur won $7,250 in scholarships and more than $12,000 in prizes. She is a political science major.

A year’s worth of police traffic stops in Chittenden County provides insufficient data to track racial profiling but verifies a much-longer-ranging commitment to identify and reduce biases, community leaders said at a meeting Wednesday night at Burlington College.

Wanda Hines, a key organizer in the Uncommon Alliance — a 4-year-old grassroots collaboration with police departments in Burlington, South Burlington, the University of Vermont and Winooski — hailed the study as an important way to document the community’s collective “growing pains” as it becomes more culturally diverse.

The police departments began collecting information in 2009 on how its officers processed offenses or perceived offenses. While collection is ongoing, the first calendar year’s data (about 13,400 traffic stops) was analyzed by the Institute on Race and Justice at Northeastern University. The report was finished in December and released publicly Wednesday.

The study’s relatively small sample size complicated the search for trends, said Robert Appel, executive director of the Vermont Human Rights Commission.
