Legerski welcomes a team with just one returning starter and six freshmen on its 11-player roster on his 9th year as the University of Wyoming women’s basketball coach.
Legerski said that one of the things they have talked about is they will be going to need patience from the head coach. They’re so young and he believed that being talented is the very key to success aside from attaining experience and team chemistry. He said he can handle all this but it will not be so easy.
UW not only has to replace four starters — including Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Aubrey Vandiver and all-MWC selection Hillary Carlson. But this offseason, the Cowgirls lost key reserves Bec Campigli because she will be playing in Australia and Kristen Scheffler was having a recurring back injury so she was forced to retire.
That group helped lead UW to a 24-9 record and into the third round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament last season. It was University’s 5th postseason appearance in six years.
If the Cowgirls hope to keep that streak alive, 6-foot-1 junior Chaundra Sewell will likely be the driving force possessing an honorable mention all-conference selection last year, averaged 9.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Legerski said they are going to be very different and they will be competing and play the way Wyoming plays. Yet the team will need Chaundra Sewell as the leader this year. They will have to play harder until younger players grow up.
Juniors Ashley Sickles and Brenna Freeze, and sophomores Chelan Landry and Kaylee Hoffman will also be counted on for playing time. But Legerski has no doubt that UW will need solid contributions from its freshmen in order to be competitive in the MWC.
Legerski will bring freshmen in the playing team and he has observed rookies Kayla Woodward (Sheridan), Kaitlyn Mileto and Alison Gorrell have worked their way into the playing rotation during the first week of practice.
The team is getting more excited on what will be the outcomes they can make. Nevertheless Legerski said that patience would be the top key word.

According to source, University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman announced on Monday that they have let go basketball head coach Heath Schroyer.
“I regret having to make this decision to terminate Heath’s contract at this time, but I feel it is in the best interest of our program,” said Burman. “We are grateful for the time Heath has been our coach. He inherited a difficult situation, and his actions here exemplify his character and support for his players and UW. While winning is key to a successful program, we cannot lose sight of the off-the-court progress this program has made under Heath’s guidance.”
The Cowboys hired Schroyer on March 23, 2007 after the program fired then head coach Steve McClain.
During his four-year tenure, Schroyer compiled a 49-68 record. His best season came in 2008-09 when Wyoming posted a 19-14 overall record and a 7-9 showing in the Mountain West Conference.
Associate head coach Fred Langly will serve as the interim coach for the remainder of the season. Burman said a national search for a head coach will commence immediately.

According to source, The University of Wyoming’s Nordic ski program hasn’t been a varsity sport since the early 1990s.
That hasn’t stopped UW from becoming a national power as a club sport; the men’s and women’s teams have won a combined nine United States Collegiate Ski Association national championships in the past seven years.
Even with that success, UW coach Christi Boggs was surprised when she found out late last year that the Cowboys and Cowgirls had been selected to participate in the upcoming Winter World University Games, which begin Wednesday in Erzurum, Turkey.
“My initial reaction was complete shock,” Boggs said. “I actually said to [the selection committee], ‘You know we’re not the fastest team in the nation?’”
UW, which competes in NCAA Division II, did, however, meet other requirements in addition to its success nationally.
Whereas most DI teams are comprised primarily of European skiers, the UW teams have a distinct American presence. More impressively, eight of the 14 UW skiers expected to compete in the Winter World University Games are Wyoming natives.
“[The selection committee] said they needed a full American team, and they were aware of our club status,” Boggs said. “They also said they wanted a team that specifically was about more than just speed.”
With a team grade-point average of 3.52 and the experience gained from holding multiple fund raisers, the UW program definitely qualified.
