According to source, Before he died, Thomas Jefferson is believed to have contemplated the political nature of man by reviewing his copy of Aristotle’s “Politica.”

Now, nearly 185 years later, historians at The Thomas Jefferson Foundation and librarians for Washington University in St. Louis’ special collections have not only found that book, they’ve found 74 volumes from Jefferson’s library that have been in the university’s rare book collection since the 1880s.

“It’s significant not only because of the size of the collection and the fact that there could easily be more books that Jefferson owned, but because of what books were found,” said Endrina Tay, librarian for technical services for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello. “There are architectural books that Jefferson used when designing the pavilions on the Lawn as well as the books that were around Jefferson when he died.”

Officials identified the architectural books as being written by Freart de Chambray, with one by Andrea Palladio.
