According to source – Researchers at West Virginia University have won more than $350,000 for work that could help maximize gas production in the Marcellus shale field underlying parts of Appalachia.

The grant from the Gas Technology Institute will let a team in the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering apply new technology to create better models for how reservoirs function.

Professor Shahab Mohaghegh (ma HA gay) says that could save time and help create more accurate models of gas flow. Over time, more wells and more historical data would improve the modeling.

Funding for the project comes from an oil and gas program authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 2005. It’s funded with lease bonuses and royalties that oil and gas companies pay to drill on federal land.
