Law School Dating

CULLOWHEE — Learn more about student press and free speech rights during a free presentation at Western Carolina University.

The event, sponsored by WCU’s student newspaper, The Western Carolinian, is 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, in the grandroom of A.K. Hinds University Center on campus. The program kicks off a semester-long celebration of the First Amendment, sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

Frank LoMonte, executive director of the nonprofit Student Press Law Center, is the guest speaker. LaMonte was previously an attorney with an Atlanta firm and has more than 12 years experience as a journalist, including serving two years as a state capitol reporter for the Florida Times-Union, nine years as bureau chief for the Morris News Service in Atlanta, and two years as Washington correspondent for Morris.

The Student Press Law Center educates high school and college journalists about the rights and responsibilities embodied in the First Amendment, and provides supports the student news media as it covers important issues.

Local students earned degrees at Western Carolina University

According to source, Western Carolina University located in Cullowhee, N.C. conferred degrees to approximately 500 students who completed their studies during the summer school sessions of 2010. Local graduates are as follows:

*Stacey Marie Sannem of Anderson, received a Master of Physical Therapy.

*Benjamin Joseph Hittinger of Easley, received a Bachelor of Science.

A total of 189 undergraduate students received academic honors, with 112 graduating summa cum laude (with highest honors), 56 graduating magna cum laude (with high honors), and 21 graduating cum laude (with honors).
